Day 6: December 30 ... Granada, the city of pomegranates
Did you know?
The ancient city of Granada was renamed after the fruit during the Moorish period, and you see the pomegranate represented in monuments and architecture throughout the city.
The name pomegranate derives from medieval Latin pōmum "apple" and grānātum "seeded".
The French term grenade for pomegranate has given its name to the military grenade. Soldiers commented on the similar shape of early grenades and the name entered common usage.
The pomegranate is a shrub or small tree growing 6 to 10 metres high. It has multiple spiny branches, and is extremely long-lived, with some specimens in France surviving for 200 years
Ancient Egyptians regarded the pomegranate as a symbol of prosperity and ambition.
Pomegranates were known in Ancient Israel as the fruits which the scouts brought to Moses to demonstrate the fertility of the "promised land".
