Culturally contingent leadership behaviour - Commissario Montalbano
I'm watching the series Inspector Montalbano, and it's great!
Inspector Montalbano (Italian: Il commissario Montalbano) is an Italian television series produced and broadcast by RAI, beginning in 1999, based on the detective novels of Andrea Camilleri. The protagonist is Commissario Salvo Montalbano, and the stories are set in the imaginary town of Vigàta, Sicily.
The following article is a character study of Montalbano and speaks to how culture shapes leadership.

August 25, 2015 ... il mio 60° compleanno indimenticabile ... my unforgettable 60th birthday
In 2001, I visited Italy for the first time. There, in Venice, Fred and I happened upon a restaurant, a refuge, where the two female proprietors treated us to a sublime culinary experience. What they served was an extraordinary meal wrapped in a "let us take care of you" parchment. Since those two nights, because one night there was not enough, I have wondered what it would be like to experience an Italian version of “Babette's Feast”, a meal lovingly prepared by an Italian mamma ... and her legion of loyal assistants ... in an Italian home.

Sew the seed, I always say, and the universe conspires to make a dream come true ... or perhaps in some unconscious way, we begin to play an active role in making a set of disjointed activities and events culminate in the achievement of a dream.

In 2008, Fred and I traveled to a beautiful archipelago in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence off the coast of Quebec ... a man who was traveling on the same inbound flight deduced that we were first-time visitors to this magical place called Les Iles de la Madeleine, and he offered to show us around the islands one afternoon. But more importantly, he introduced me to a virtual traveler network called Couchsurfing, whose members "surf" the couches of host members willing to open their homes and provide free, short-term accommodations to travelers from around the globe. Shortly after our return to Toronto, I signed on as a member.

In 2014, via the Couchsurfing site, I responded to a posting from a young Italian university exchange student in Montreal who was looking for accommodations during a planned visit to Toronto. We hosted Stefano for several days and laid the groundwork for what has become a lasting and important friendship.

I ended 2014 with a decision to put work on hold, perhaps indefinitely, and to dedicate time to other interests. I began studying Italian in April, 2015 with a brilliant teacher whose love of the South of Italy sparked an interest on my part. More than once, Fred has heard me speak of the desire to experience a meal in a Southern Italian home.
In the background, Fred was connecting all the dots in preparation for my 60th birthday surprise on August 25.

on our way to Rome on August 22, 2015 |
On August 22, we traveled to Rome. That's as much as I knew in advance. To my surprise, Fred had arranged a reunion with Stefano, whom we had not seen since his visit to our place in 2014. Stefano graciously and generously hosted us in his flat in Rome. There, he shared his friends with us ... always around the table, always around food lovingly and meticulously prepared.

What followed was a day, spent mostly around a table in a garden, among a family and their friends who welcomed two strangers from another world ... with warmth and affection and humanity that moved us to tears more than once. The late summer sun, the breeze, the conversation, a mix of Italian and the Neapolitan dialect, recollections of the past, the curiosity, the laughter … and music. When Stefano’s sister, Laura, played a Youtube video on her cellphone of the song "Caruso", conversation ceased as if in homage to a place and way of life, and we all sang ... "Te voglio bene assaje, ma tanto tanto bene sai" (“I love you very much. Very very much, you know."). It is difficult for me to find words that adequately describe the manner in which we were welcomed into their lives.

"Caruso" is a song written by Italian singer-songwriter Lucio Dalla in 1986. It is dedicated to Enrico Caruso, the great Italian tenor who was born in Naples (and who died at the young age of 48 after a career that took him throughout Europe and the Americas). Click here to hear a live version of Caruso sung by Lucio Dalla. Click here for more information on the origin and meaning of this song.

Neapolitans are famous for their cuisine, and a feast of extraordinary food, orchestrated by Stefano’s mom, Maria, unfolded before our eyes ... from the opening aperitivos (a mouthwatering assortment featuring roast pork, prosciutto, anchovies, cherry tomatoes and green and black olives) to the two pasta courses (the first with clams and beans, the second with squid ... both, with an explosion of flavour that made us wish we could freeze the moment forever) to the secondi piati (croquettes made with potato and provola cheese, eggplant parmigiana with smoked provola and then, Campania’s world famous Mozzarella di bufala) to the just-perfect figs and watermelon and nectarines ... to the celebratory spumante and tiramisu (Laura’s rendition makes all others pale in comparison). This was a slow culinary journey that produced one palatable surprise after another. Time and time again, Fred and I looked at each other with a gesture that yelled "I'd say something if I could find the words, but my palate is busy and speechless." Lively conversation (and our very broken Italian) wove its way through every course from early afternoon to dusk ... at a table ... among a family of new and old friends ... in a garden ... in the Campania region of southern Italy.

We moved about effortlessly and comfortably, like people who had practiced for decades to know when it was fitting to join and retreat, and following the main meal, I found myself on a hammock taking a sweet nap, with the din of table conversation and laughter in the background.

Late in the afternoon, following the arrival of Stefano’s sister Monica and her family from a camping vacation to the coast, we gathered around the table in celebration of my 60 years. A tiramisu with a burning candle was placed before me ... the pop of the cork of the Spumante ... the toast. I made an important wish, and we laughed heartily over my reference to all the paparazzi poised with cellphones and ready to take THE picture at THE moment when I would blow out the flame that symbolized the passing of 60 years. This was a scene out of Fellini’s La Dolce Vita. Then, the gifts ... a key chain from Ana with a Neopolitan good-luck charm, and, from Stefano’s parents, Maria and Luigi, a wall plaque with an aphorism attributed to an Italian comedian, born in Naples, named Totò. The aphorism appears below:
L'ignorante parla a vanvera (the ignorant person speaks nonsense),
l'intelligente parla al momento opportuno (the intelligent person speaks at the appropriate time),
il saggio parla se interpellato (the wise person speaks when spoken to),
il fesso parla sempre (the fool speaks always).

My dream came true on the first day of my 60th year, and it was so much more than the dream I had dreamed.
To Maria, Luigi, Laura, Monica, Stefano, Ana, Maria, Rosario, Sara and Matteo ... we thank you for your heart-felt, generous and genuine hospitality. You gave us a moment that will last a lifetime.

Kuala Lumpur: street life
The diverse cultural mix of KL is evident everywhere, but I think the following picture captures the essence of urban street life.

Kuala Lumpur: the Petronas Towers
The Petronas Towers, also known as the Petronas Twin Towers (Malay: Menara Petronas, or Menara Berkembar Petronas), are twin skyscrapers in Kuala Lumpur. They were the tallest buildings in the world from 1998 to 2004 and remain the tallest twin towers in the world.
They are the headquarters for Petronas, an international oil and gas company wholly owned by the Government of Malaysia.
The towers were designed by Argentine - North American architect César Pelli. A distinctive postmodern style was chosen to create a 21st-century icon for Kuala Lumpur.
The 88-floor towers are constructed largely of reinforced concrete, with a steel and glass facade designed to resemble motifs found in Islamic art, a reflection of Malaysia's Muslim religion.
Below the twin towers is Suria KLCC, a shopping mall, a 140,000 m2 (1,500,000 sq ft) upmarket retail center featuring mostly foreign luxury goods and high-street labels. Click here to watch a video taken inside the mall.
Also below the twin towers is the Dewan Filharmonik Petronas, the home of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra.
Spanning 17 acres below the Towers is the KLCC Park with jogging and walking paths and a fountain with incorporated light show. Click here to watch my video of the light show.

Kuala Lumpur: the KL Tower
The Kuala Lumpur Tower (Malay: Menara Kuala Lumpur) is used for communication purposes and features an antenna that reaches 421 meters (1,381 feet), making it the 7th tallest freestanding tower in the world. It is an iconic backdrop to many sites of interest in KL.
Menara Kuala Lumpur was officially inaugurated on October 1, 1996.
The tower also acts as the Islamic falak observatory to observe the crescent moon which marks the beginning of the Muslim month of Ramadhan.
The main lobby of the upper ground floor is decorated with exquisite glass-clad domes that sparkle like giant diamonds. These domes were designed and arranged in the form of the Muqarnas by Iranian craftsmen from Isfahan.
When constructing the KL Tower, the builders took special care to construct a retaining wall around a 100-year-old jelutong tree (Dyera costulata).
